Kindergarten at CCS is a time of discovery and preparation! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, kindergartners gain an experience that will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Beginning reading concepts are taught using a strong, phonics-based curriculum that promotes fluency and comprehension. Accompanying the skills of reading, writing is taught so that students can communicate with the world that they are discovering. Foundational mathematics skills are taught including number sense, counting, basic addition and subtraction, and measuring of length, temperature, time and money. In social studies, our students learn about people and places so that they can discover how God directs in people’s lives to accomplish His will. Many interesting topics are explored in science using a variety of methods and hands-on activities, especially during their weekly STEM time. Our children are also taught about God through the lives of major Bible characters while participating in activities that help them comprehend and apply Bible truths.
By participation in our full-day program, kindergartners also discover and explore more of God’s creation through other disciplines including art, computer, library, music, physical education and Spanish. Field trips are also regularly utilized to enhance the discovery and preparation!
First grade at CCS is a time for laying the foundation! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, first graders begin building the groundwork that will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Using a strong, phonics-based curriculum that promotes fluency and comprehension, reading concepts and strategies are taught and practiced. Grammar, including sentence construction and identification of parts of speech, is introduced so that the foundation for effective communication is laid. Foundational mathematics skills are built upon including comparison, addition and subtraction, graphing and problem solving. In social studies, our students learn about our great country, America, and how we are one part of a world made of many countries and cultures. While studying science, our first graders see that God is the creator of and provider for animals and humans. This is enhanced with weekly time spent in our fully-equipped science lab during STEAM time. In addition to being included in discussions and applications in every subject area, our children are also taught from Scripture while participating in activities that help them comprehend and apply Bible truths.
By participation in our first-grade program, our students are building for the future to which God is calling them. Involvement in classes including art, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish and our field trips give our first-graders the opportunity to build a strong foundation!
Second grade at CCS is a time for firming up the foundation! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, second graders become more independent and interdependent, which will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Reading concepts and strategies are taught and practiced in every subject. Fluency, expression and comprehension are emphasized. Grammar and writing skills, including sentence construction, paragraph construction and editing, are learned so that the foundation for effective communication is firmed up. Mathematics skills are solidified in the areas of addition and subtraction so that the foundation is firm for future math concepts. In social studies, our second-graders learn about the diverse people who make up our great country, America, understanding that God loves all people. Enhanced with weekly time spent in our fully-equipped science lab during STEAM time, our students confirm that God has a purpose and plan in everything by studying plants, the basics of physical science, weather and astronomy. In Bible, our second-graders are shown clearly God’s plan for the world and for each of us from Scripture. The plan of salvation and the results of salvation are clearly expressed, giving every student the opportunity to make Christ their solid rock and firm foundation!
At CCS, our students are shoring up the foundational skills for their futures. Participation in art, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish and our field trips helps afford our second-graders the opportunity to build a strong future!
Third grade at CCS is a time for transition and building on the foundation! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, third-graders become thinkers about and appliers of foundational knowledge and skills, which will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Reading comprehension and vocabulary expansion are taught and practiced in every subject. The variety of purposes for reading and writing are enthusiastically shared with our students. The writing process, including allowing for and encouraging reflection, is emphasized; while the mechanics of grammar, spelling and vocabulary are practiced. Basic mathematical skills are applied as our students expand their knowledge into the areas of multiplication, division, fractions and problem solving. Our third-graders discover through the study of biographies of famous Americans how God uses people to accomplish His purposes. Through investigating, observing and thinking about the topics of plants, motion, force, electricity, rocks, soils, the solar system and the human body, our third- grader’s science knowledge is enhanced with weekly time spent in our fully-equipped science lab during STEAM time. Our students think about and apply the lessons learned through the study of important Bible characters, such as Joseph and Daniel, and the memorization of Scripture and study of character traits, transitioning from external knowledge to internal application.
At CCS, our third-graders are beginning to apply foundational skills for use in their futures. Our students become stronger, independent learners while developing more skills in teamwork and cooperation through the study of art, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish and off-site experiences!
Fourth grade at CCS is a time for developing personal responsibility! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, fourth-graders become more independent while also becoming more aware of their actions, the consequences and the dynamics of working in a group, all of which will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Learning to use prediction, connections and inference expands the reading comprehension skills of our students. Multiple novels are read and studied with individual and group projects presented to demonstrate the meaning and enjoyment of several genres of literature. The writing process continues to be emphasized while encouraging individual development of skills in grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Multiple-digit multiplication and division, addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals, estimating, rounding, predicting, probability and solving word problems are just some of the mathematical concepts that are taught and practiced. By studying the history of Virginia and how it plays a role in the history of American, our fourth-graders realize how God uses individual people and people groups. The themes of individuality and interdependence are continued as our students’ study systems of life, transfer of energy and electricity, interrelationships of earth and space, and patterns and cycles on Earth. Weekly STEAM time in our fully-equipped science lab promote curiosity, collaboration and personal responsibility. By studying the life of Christ and hiding God’s word in their hearts, our fourth-graders gain a deeper understanding of their personal relationship with Jesus and how that should impact their lives daily.
At CCS, our fourth-graders are developing personal responsibility within the context of community. These skills are improved through the study of art, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish and field trips!
Fifth grade at CCS is a time for refining foundational knowledge and expanding learning horizons! With the assistance of our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, fifth-graders continue to become more independent and develop problem solving skills which will help them become life-long learners and followers of Christ.
Developing an appreciation for a variety of literature is acquired while learning to analyze, summarize and synthesize the text. Our students write a variety of essays including expository, descriptive, persuasive and narrative, refining their ability to communicate clearly and concisely. The foundational math skills are polished while other concepts are expanded such as geometry, algebra, graphs, ratios, probability and percent, all in preparation for higher math. Our fifth-graders hone their knowledge of the founding of our country and expand their understanding of conflict resolution and God’s provision by studying American history to the end of the civil war. Weekly STEAM time in our fully-equipped science lab inspires problem solving and critical thinking skills through hands-on activities. By studying the structure of atoms and cells, the characteristics of sound and light, the changes that occur on the Earth’s surface and the features of an ocean environment, our fifth-graders strengthen their understanding of God as the creator and designer. In preparation for the transition from elementary school to middle school, the themes of courage and leadership are taught and applied as our students study Old Testament Bible characters.
At CCS, our fifth-graders are becoming fully prepared to move on into the next phase of their education. Their knowledge by the end of fifth grade is refined and expanded through the study of art, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish and field trips!
